Speaker Biographies

Speakers David E. Baker, Vice President, External Affairs, Illinois Institute of Technology; Executive Director, University Technology Park at IIT David E. Baker was named Vice President for External Affairs at Illinois Institute of Technology in March 1995. He is responsible for the University’s governmental relations, technology park development, and trustee relations. Over the past six years he has worked to create the University Technology Park at IIT of which he serves as Executive Director. Most recently he has taken on staff leadership of the university’s strategic planning process. He also helped open the Perspectives/IIT Math and Science Academy, a public grade 6-12 charter school in September 2008. Mr. Baker holds an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies, and an A.B. in History, with a minor in Economics, from Stanford University.
James Berens, President Wexford Science + Technology Jim Berens charts the overall strategic direction of Wexford, which was acquired from Townsend Capital in 2005, and leads the executive management team. His experience includes the development and marketing of flexible, state-of-the-art research and laboratory spaces for universities, university-related research parks, healthcare systems, development of commercial real estate, and the redevelopment and repositioning of existing properties. Mr. Berens also brings his intimate knowledge of corporate financial structuring, debt and equity markets, and tax and accounting regulations as they relate to real estate leases and financing. He was President of Townsend Capital, LLC, a private real estate investment company focused on Fortune 500 companies, from 1996 through 2005. Mr. Berens expanded Townsend’s business to include universities, health systems, and other non-profit institutions.
Mark Betteridge, Executive Director and CEO Discovery Parks Mark Betteridge of Discovery Parks (www.discoveryparks.com), is also President of Mark Betteridge and Associates (MBA) Incorporated. Mr. Betteridge has managed Discovery Parks to create high technology parks totaling more than 2 million square feet, making Discovery Parks the largest landlord to biotechnology firms in British Columbia. MBA Incorporated has managed business planning, rezoning and strategic planning for entities. Discovery Parks received the 2002 Outstanding Research Park Award from the Association of University Research Parks—the first time this award has been given outside the United States. He is currently a director of the BC Technology Industries Association, and former vice-chair of the Vancouver Economic Development Commission and the emerging Greater Vancouver Economic Council. He is an angel investor in early stage technology companies and a member of Lambda Alpha. Mr. Betteridge holds a Masters degree in regional planning from the University of Waterloo and a B.Sc. (Honors) from Trent University.
Peter T. Bianco, Director of Life Science Business Development Halleland Health Consulting As Director of Lifescience Business Development of Halleland Health Consulting, Peter T. Bianco has key practice experience with the creation of funding mechanisms for early stage technology companies and real estate development for lifescience physical infrastructure. He assists with the strategic organizational development for young technology companies and medical and biomimetic biomaterial product, market and project development. Mr. Bianco’s industry experience includes Fortune 500 medical device manufacturing, and medical device and internet healthcare start ups in addition to strategic consulting and academic medical center research. Mr. Bianco received his BA in Physiology from the University of Minnesota and his MBA at Suffolk University, Boston, Massachusetts.
Albert Bicol, P.Eng., LEED® AP, Partner Cobalt Engineering LLP Albert Bicol champions the use of sustainable solutions in his projects and initiated/leads Cobalt’s Campus Sustainable Energy Planning services. He has extensive expertise in Sustainable Energy Planning (SEP), passive building design, modeling building energy usage, thermal comfort and indoor air quality conditions. Mr. Bicol has a wide range of experience in Canada, United States, and Asia. This experience includes the SEP for several university campuses, mixed used developments in North America and Asia. Other projects he has been involved in include a fully underground library for a private college with a goal of Net-Zero, concept design for award winning internationally recognized Langara College Library, Kwantlen Polytechnic University buildings connected by a geoexchange district energy system, and University of British Columbia, Okanagan, Fipke Laboratory which achieved 5 Green Globes rating (equivalent to LEED Platinum).
J. Michael Bowman, AURP Immediate Past President Chairman & CEO Delaware Technology Park, Inc. Since 1998, Mike Bowman has been Chairman of the Board and President of the Delaware Technology Park Inc, (DTP) a collaboration of the State of Delaware, University of Delaware and high technology industries such as advanced materials, life sciences and information technology. In 2008, he served as President of the Board of the Association of University Research Parks, which includes about 170 U.S. and Canadian research parks. From 1990 to 1996, he was Vice President & General Manager for DuPont Advanced Materials and Systems, a one billion-dollar global business unit with 2,500 employees. Over a 30-year career at DuPont, he served professional and managerial roles in research, marketing and manufacturing. Mr. Bowman holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and attended graduate business and financial programs at Wharton and Columbia. In 2000, he was presented the UC Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Dr. Thomas Boyd, Dean of Graduate Studies Colorado School of Mines Thomas M. Boyd is currently Dean of Graduate Studies at the Colorado School of Mines. He has served in this role since 2005. In addition to holding this position, he is an Associate Professor in the Geophysics Department at the Colorado School of Mines. Dr. Boyd received his doctorate in Geophysics from Columbia University, where he studied the seismotectonics of the Aleutian Arc. As Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr. Boyd has overseen double-digit growth in graduate in each of the past three years. In addition, sponsored research has more than double over the past five years. As part of the response to this growth Dr. Boyd has worked closely with the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer to crystallize the institution’s thinking in terms of developing infrastructure to meet the needs of its expanding research and graduate education enterprises. In collaboration with Sasaki, this has resulted in the development of the Earth Energy Institute at the Colorado School of Mines.
Dr. John Byrne, Director and Distinguished Professor of Public Policy Center for Energy and Environmental Policy University of Delaware Dr. John Byrne, Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy (CEEP), Distinguished Professor of Public Policy at the University of Delaware, and contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2007, is co-founder and co-executive director of the Joint Institute for a Sustainable Energy and Environmental Future, an innovative research and policy advocacy organization headquartered in South Korea with the mission of promoting sustainable policy options in East Asia. He is also a founding member of and served as the first research chair for the International Solar Cities Initiative – a pioneering program to assist cities around the world in building sustainable futures. Dr. Byrne presently co-chairs the Sustainable Energy Utility Oversight Board, created by the Delaware General Assembly, and is the architect of this innovative concept for the promotion of energy efficiency, conservation, and distributed renewable energy generation. He received a Fulbright Senior Lecturer/Researcher Award to teach environmental policy at the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Seoul National University and to conduct research on a National Greenhouse Gas Abatement Strategy for the Korea Energy Economics Institute.
Kevin Byrne, AURP 2nd Vice President Chief Investment Officer The University Financing Foundation Kevin Byrne spent his early career at Arthur Andersen with primary focus in the real estate and financial services industries. Mr. Byrne was named to several Andersen specialty teams and developed several of the real estate structuring techniques used by real estate entities today. In 1997, Mr. Byrne founded Byrne & Associates, which focused on providing investment banking services to small and middle market companies. After earning his MBA with Honors from the Wharton School of Business in 2001, Mr. Byrne joined a real estate development firm as the Chief Financial Officer, managing a balance sheet of over $200 million and leading new transactions of over $150 million in just 2 years. Since joining The University Financing Foundation (TUFF) in 2003, Mr. Byrne has led the firms deepening involvement in Research Park development including crafting full-scale park business plans and innovative investment structures that enable parks to maximize the efficiency of its limited resources. Mr. Byrne is an Honors graduate from Furman University, and currently, is the Chief Investment Officer of TUFF. He serves on the Association of University Research Park Board of Directors.
David M. Carlino, Principal Cannon Design David Carlino joined Cannon Design in 1996 with 18 years’ experience in public accounting and finance. As the firm’s chief financial officer, he is responsible for overall financial planning, budgeting, banking, and financial operations. He is a leader in assisting clients in financial aspects of building construction, including coordinating financing and bonding opportunities. He represents Cannon Design at the AIA’s Large Firm Round Table and is a member of the Financial Executives Institute, which represents more than 8,000 corporations.
Jackie Copland, Global University Relations Team Member Electronic Arts Jackie Copland is a member of the Global University Relations Team of Electronic Arts (EA), the world’s largest interactive entertainment software company. Her physical office is based at EA’s development studio in Burnaby, BC, but she works with all five of EA’s studios in Canada, and many post secondary institutions across the country. University Relations at EA is a centralized team that manages relationships with faculty, professors, staff, and students at colleges and universities worldwide. Prior to joining EA in 2006, Ms. Copland worked for with Co-op students and employers for five years in the Engineering Co-op Program at the University of British Columbia, building partnerships between academia and industry, and helping students to transition from school to work. She also has a scientific background, with 6 years in the mining industry as a research project manager working with new refining technologies. She holds a B.Sc. from McGill University, and an MBA from Queen’s University.
Dr. Tom Corr CEO, The Accelerator Centre at the Waterloo Research and Technology Park; Associate Vice-President of Commercialization at the University of Waterloo Dr. Tom Corr is responsible for overseeing the mentoring, advice, and training that is provided to the 25 early-stage companies that are located at the Accelerator Centre, with a goal of creating successful start-up companies that create economic development for the community and wealth for the company founders and investors. In his role at the University of Waterloo (UW), Dr. Corr’s primary responsibility is the management of the protection and commercialization of intellectual property developed by the researchers and students at UW. His career also includes over 30 years in the IT sector including positions as Managing Partner at Catalyst Partnership; founder and CEO of Momentum Systems; founder and CEO of Applied Development Corp., and president of Canadian Data Processing Corp. Dr. Corr's received his Doctor of Business Administration degree from Henley Management College/Brunel University in England, an MBA from the University of Toronto, and an Advanced Post Graduate Degree in Management Consultancy from Henley Management College.
J. Lee Coyle, AIA, LEED AP, Principal Cannon Design Mr. Lee Coyle is a leader in Cannon Design’s science and technology practice in the Mid Atlantic region of the United States. He brings over 20 years experience in the programming, planning and design of large complex projects involving multiple users and concerns. He believes it is necessary to create a true partnership with clients to create a building that is responsive and beneficial. Mr. Coyle is currently involved with multiple projects currently registered with the US Green Building Council’s LEED Certification program. He believes it necessary to include sustainable design features in his work – not only to protect the environment, but to protect his client’s bottom line.
Brian Darmody, AURP 1st Vice President Associate Vice President of Research and Economic Development, University System of Maryland; Special Assistant Vice Chancellor for Technology Development, University of Maryland Brian Darmody serves as university legal counsel and assistant to the president and director of federal and state government relations. Projects led by Mr. Darmody include organizing the university's first technology transfer office, authoring reforms to the state's public/private ethics legislation for university professors, successfully lobbying for the university's high-technology incubator facility, creating the legislation that formed the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO), a state technology development organization, and creating RPM (Research Parks Maryland), the nation's first statewide organization of university-affiliated research parks. Mr. Darmody previously served as a staff member for the U.S. House of Representatives, the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis, Maryland, and in the Office of Attorney-Advisor, U.S. Health Care Financing Administration. In his role with the University System of Maryland he focuses on improving technology transfer across the University System of Maryland and representing higher education regarding BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission) recommendations affecting federal facilities in Maryland and the region, among other duties. He serves on numerous local and national boards, including the Association of University Research Parks. He holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore and an undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.
Gregory W. Deason, AURP President Vice President - Real Estate & Research Park Director, Purdue Research Parks Greg Deason leads a Purdue University-affiliated team that is transforming the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette into an engine for Indiana's economic development initiatives. As Vice President, Mr. Deason is also the Director of the Purdue Research Park and has broad responsibilities related to a diverse portfolio of real estate. Mr. Deason is leading statewide efforts to build research parks and incubators throughout Indiana. This includes developments in Northwest Indiana (near Chicago), Southeast Indiana (near Louisville) and Indianapolis. He is involved in several technology parks throughout the state of Indiana as well as the Indiana Business Incubation Society. Under his leadership, the Purdue Research Park was recognized by AURP as the Outstanding Science/Research Park in 2004, and for the Excellence in Technology Transfer Award in 2005. Mr. Deason serves as President on the Association of University Research Parks Board of Directors and participates in numerous community and civic activities.
Michael J. Donovan, Senior Associate Vice President for Real Estate Management Boston University Michael J. Donovan is the Senior Associate Vice President for Real Estate Management for Boston University. In this role, he is responsible for managing campus planning as well as the acquisition, disposition and development of University owned and leased commercial properties at the University’s Charles River and Medical Center Campuses in Boston and other national and international locations. He is also a member of University Associates Limited Partnership, the entity responsible for BioSquare, a 16 acre, 2 million square foot research and business park currently under development at the University’s nearby Medical Campus. BioSquare is also the site of the new National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory, a 190,000 square foot BSL 4 facility due to be completed in 2009. He also manages activities related to the BioSquare Discovery and Innovation Center, Boston’s life sciences incubator and works closely with the Boston University Photonics Center and its venture-leasing activities. Mr. Donovan is experienced in developing promising life sciences start ups from the pre-money/seed level stage upward as a result of companies founded at BioSquare through Boston University, Harvard University, MIT, the Whitehead Institute and other centers of research. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Biotechnology Industry Organization's (BIO) Council of Biotechnology Centers and the Association of University Research Parks (AURP) and is a member of the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA). He is also a member of LifeTech Boston, a strategic advisory committee of executives founded by the Mayor of Boston to help further facilitate, fund and grow the life sciences industry in the City of Boston. Mr. Donovan is a graduate of Boston College, cum laude, and the Suffolk University Law School in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a member of the Bar for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as well as the American and Boston Bar Associations.
Michael Driedger, Dip T LEED® AP Sustainability Research Advisor Busby Perkins + Will Joining the Busby Perkins+Will in 2007, Michael Driedger is a LEED® Canada Accredited Professional with 15 years of experience working in the construction trades, architecture, and research. His diverse work experience has helped develop his talents in project management, LEED co-ordination, research and carbon emissions analysis. He has been involved in a number of projects at the community scale and has developed policy papers for the cities of Vancouver and Richmond, the USGBC, and the RCMP. His experience with the LEED rating system involves work at Dockside Green, third party reviews for the CaGBC as well as teaching and mentoring those attempting to learn sustainable design.
Russell Drinker, AIA, LEED AP, Principal Perkins+Will Russell Drinker has undertaken planning studies and building projects around the world, demonstrating a special ability to solve complex challenges of program, budget, and schedule. Mr. Drinkers key clients include the new Princess Noura-bin-Abdulrahman University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Stanford University; and the University of California System, where he has worked on six campuses in the past seven years. Other clients for major planning assignments include Chevron, USA; the U.S. Department of State; Santa Clara University; and the Marine Mammal Center. Several of his projects have been recognized with prestigious awards, including two for lab buildings at Stanford University: Lab of the Year for the James H. Clark Center and the AIA's Excellence in Architecture Award for the Richard M. Lucas Expansion.
Ricardo Dumont, Principal Sasaki Associates As head of landscape architecture at Sasaki, Mr. Dumont plays a leading design role in much of the firm's collegiate, urban university, and urban design practice. His extensive experience in the United States and abroad includes award-winning master planning, urban design, and built work for more than 40 universities and institutions including Harvard University, Queens University in Canada, Vanderbilt University, Utah State University, Cornell University, Bates College, Northwestern University, Sacred Heart University, and the Mayo Clinic campus in Phoenix.
Jeffrey French, FAIA, Principal Ballinger Jeff French’s primary concentration is on science and research facilities. His contribution to architecture for science has been recognized by his elevation to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects. He has served as a grant review panelist for the National Foundation and National Institutes of Health, and lectured for organizations such as the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Food and Drug Administration, and the New York Academy of Sciences. Mr. French has co-authored the National Science Foundation’s guidebook on academic research facility planning. His recent research facility work includes prestigious academic and corporate institutions throughout the United States.
David Fuller, Director, Innovation Campus University of Wollongong, Australia David Fuller has developed the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus from its inception some seven years ago and now directs it operation and development. Mr. Fuller is also currently President of the Technology Parks Australia and New Zealand (TPANZ) and President of Australia New Zealand Regional Science Association (ANZRSAI).
Dale Gann, President – Technology Parks Vancouver Island Technology Park & Marine Technology Centre President, AURP Canada As the President — Technology Parks, Mr. Gann is accountable for the vision, development, and day-to-day management of the Vancouver Island Technology Park and the Marine Technology Centre. The President — Technology Parks provides leadership and strategic direction to the team by developing innovative site plans, establishing relationships with academia, industry and government to grow the high tech cluster on Vancouver Island. Mr. Gann holds over twelve year’s executive experience in North America’s high technology sector. He has long been recognized for building relationships with media, industry, academics and government; and for his valuable involvement in BC’s six key technology clusters. Mr. Gann has achieved significant success in public relations campaign planning and implementation. Mr. Gann serves on the Association of University Research Parks Board of Directors, is president of the Association of University Research Parks Canadian Chapter, is a proud member of several other industry associations, and sits on many key committees dedicated to enhancing the reputation and success of organizations within the high-tech sector in British Columbia.
Robert T. Geolas, AURP Board of Directors Executive Director Clemson University-International Center for Automotive Research Robert T. Geolas is executive director of the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) where he is responsible for overall leadership and management of the Clemson auto research campus. He recruits additional partners from the automotive and motor sports industries and coordinates the private and public sectors to create an environment where world-class education, research and business activities will flourish. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Mr. Geolas worked as executive assistant to the North Carolina Secretary of Transportation and as legislative liaison for the North Carolina Speaker of the House. He served on the Commission for a Competitive North Carolina and North Carolina’s Governors’ Task Force for Regionalism, and the Governors’ Policy Council.
Molly Gilbert, Director of Strategic Initiatives The University of Arizona Science and Technology Park Molly Gilbert is responsible for the development of new programs and enterprises that promote the activities of technology commercialization. She has served as project manager for the Arizona Bioscience Park, worked with the Vail School District to move Vail High School to a new location in the Tech Park and is serving as Project Manager for the Border Security and Technology Commercialization Center. She provides assistance in the management of community engagement, public outreach and special events. Ms. Gilbert also serves as the Deputy Director for the Associate Vice President for University Research Parks. She is the founder and principal of Research Park Associates 2 (RPA2), a consulting firm providing expertise in research park development and operations as well as regional economic development.
Federico de Gispert Boix, Advisor Aula Dei Science Park Federico de Gispert Boix studied economics at Ramon University, ESADE School of Business, and received his MBA from IESE Business School, including MBA exchange programs at Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, and Tuck Business School at Dartmouth. He has developed a career at different industries and job positions always related to innovation strategies. Mr. Gispert is currently an advisor of the Aula Dei Science Park Foundation helping the management team define strategy and growth policies. Mr. Gispert is co-founder of the ESADE Alumni Innovation Club, and combines his professional career with teaching classes at ESADE Business School.
Reynold Gonzalez, AURP Board of Directors Director of PIIT Research Park, Monterrey, Mexico and Director Technological and Scientific Infrastructure Instituto de Innovacion y Transferencia de Tecnologia, Nuevo Leon State Gov. Reynold Gonzalez is a graduate of Monterrey Tech (ITESM) and joined the Nuevo Leon State Institute of Innovation and Technology Transfer in 2004 where he has managed the Research Park Project (PIIT) since that date. As Director of PIIT, he has coordinated the park's master plan design and execution, as well as the efforts for attracting companies and research centers to be established at the park. Prior to that, Reynold Gonzalez worked for Metalsa, a Mexican group in the automotive industry where he created and managed the Company`s Tech Center.
Robert A. Greene, Managing Director InVenture Partner LLC Robert Greene has developed internal programs, initiatives, and ventures for corporate and non-profit technology-based organizations since 1997, when he founded InVenture Partner, a focused management services firm specializing in various aspects of early-stage technology commercialization. Mr. Greene combines ten years of consulting success with 15 years of general management and executive experience at technology startups and established companies. He earned his MBA from Harvard Business School and BS in Biology from Yale University.
Marianna Grossman, Executive Director Sustainable Silicon Valley Marianna Grossman is Executive Director of Sustainable Silicon Valley, a consortium of businesses, governments and civic organizations dedicated to addressing key environmental pressures, building a strong economy and a resilient community. Previous roles include Partner for Sustainability and Innovation for Minerva Consulting; investor in startups; and corporate roles in the automotive, computer and semiconductor industries. She earned an MBA from Yale University and a BA cum laude, with distinction in Policy Studies from Dartmouth College. Sustainable Silicon Valley is leading the Silicon Valley community to create a more sustainable future. We do this by engaging and collaborating with local government agencies, businesses, and community organizations to create sustainable solutions in the areas of energy, water, and other resources to catalyze the transition to a clean, green economy.
Thomas S. Harvath, AIA, Principal Cannon Design Thomas Harvath brings over 30 years of experience to Cannon Design as an architect specializing in laboratory space planning and design. His projects have been recognized with 20 American Institute of Architects Design Awards. His Research Park experience includes projects at University Technology Park at IIT, Missouri University Life Science Business Incubator, Science and Technology Park at Johns Hopkins, Center for Emerging Technologies in St. Louis and the Greater New Orleans Biotechnology Development District.
David Helliwell, Co-Founder Pulse Energy David Helliwell leads the day-to-day operations of Pulse Energy and has been involved in the energy sector since 1994, when he worked as an exploration geophysicist with Amoco Canada in Calgary, Canada. Since then he has lived and worked around the world as a geophysicist, a poorly-paid professional windsurfer, and corporate strategy consultant. From 2002 to 2005 he worked as a senior policy advisor to federal cabinet minister in the Canadian government. While at the department of Public Works and Government Services in 2004, he led a project to green government operations by setting new standards for the government's 700 million square feet of buildings and $1B/month of procurement. Mr. Helliwell has studied geophysics, economics and business at the University of British Columbia, Harvard University and the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees (Paris).
Curtis M. Hess, RPA AURP Board of Director Senior Vice President, Real Estate The Science Center Curtis Hess is responsible for the management and leasing of office and lab space at the University City Science Center. Mr. Hess taps into 25 years of diversified real estate experience, having managed property assets at Brandywine Realty Trust, Lubert-Adler Management, and Equitable Real Estates. He is a Certified Public Accountant, has his Real Property Administrator designation with BOMA, and earned his BA in Business Administration from West Chester University. He now serves on the Board of AURP.
Murray Hestley, Director of VDC, Project Manager Whiting-Turner Contracting Company Murray Hestley is the Director of Whiting-Turner’s Virtual Design and Construction Building Group. Mr. Hestley is responsible for guiding the corporate-wide implementation of VDC, BIM, and the various delivery methods for the technology. He directs the evaluation and selection of software platforms for use within the company, including education programs to train operations personnel. Mr. Hestley manages the development and use of the company’s own VDC Execution Plan; this document defines the scope, responsibilities, and process by which VDC is used for every project Whiting-Turner undertakes.
Paul Holmes, President IdeaZone.ca Paul Holmes is President of IdeaZone.ca, a recognized leader in website design since 2000. Paul gained recognition as an authority on Social Media after organizing several successful online campaigns that embraced the technology. He is the Social Media architect for the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce and co-founded the Victoria chapter of the Social Media Club. Paul is also a contributor to many popular blogs, including his own, and regularly speaks to various groups regarding the effective use of social media.
Mitch Horowitz, Vice President and Managing Director Battelle Technology Partnership Practice Mitch Horowitz formerly served as Technology Advisor to the Governor of Maryland where he played an instrumental role in the development of Maryland’s Biotechnology Strategy in the early 1990s, being a key staff lead in the development of major research facilities, incubators, the Maryland Bioprocessing Center and industry laboratory space. He also served as Director of the Center for State and Local Development for the Corporation for Enterprise Development. He led Battelle’s recent work in Arizona preparing the core competency analysis for Arizona’s Biosciences Road Map, the Arizona Translational Research Pathway and assisting in the Arizona Information Technology and Communications Road Map. Dr. Rick Huijbregts, Vice President, Vertical Sales and Industry Solutions Cisco Canada As Vice President of Vertical Sales at Cisco Canada, Dr. Rick Huijbregts leads a national team focused on developing sales practices and building solutions for vertical markets including government, education, energy, healthcare, retail, real estate, and financial services. In this capacity he also leads the development of Canada’s fast-growing Connected Real Estate practice. Prior to joining Cisco, Dr. Huijbregts was executive director of the Center for Design Informatics at the Harvard Design School. He was also co-founder and CEO of Edificium Inc. and consulted for international clients AEW Capital, McGraw-Hill Construction, Aukett Architects and Capital Planning Technologies. Dr. Huijbregts holds a Bachelor degree in construction management from the Tilburg Poly-technical University in the Netherlands; a Masters degree in real estate development and project management from Delft University in the Netherlands; and a Doctorate from Harvard University with a specialization in real estate technology and investment management.
Greg Hyer, AURP Treasurer Associate Director University Research Park, University of Wisconsin Greg Hyer is Associate Director of University Research Park, University of Wisconsin-Madison and is an elected member of the Association of University Research Parks Board of Directors. He manages the development, financing, leasing and operation of University Research Park buildings for science and technology companies commercializing university research. He has developed over 600,000 square feet in 17 buildings, including two technology-based Innovation Centers (incubators), and is leading the design team for a second research park. Mr. Hyer has made presentations nationally (and in Europe and Asia) on both the subjects of incubators and research parks and he has consulted on the development and repositioning of research parks. Prior to joining University Research Park, Mr. Hyer served as Deputy Secretary for the State of Wisconsin Department of Development, Wisconsin’s cabinet agency for economic development. He was also an advisor to three Wisconsin governors on budget and policy issues in criminal justice, higher education and local government finance. Mr. Hyer has Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Public Administration from Indiana University. University Research Park is a strategic component of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s technology commercialization efforts and is the center of Wisconsin’s emerging biotechnology and stem cell industry. University Research Park received the inaugural Outstanding Research Park award from the Association of University Research Parks. University Research Park currently has 1,500,000 square feet on 230 acres, serving over 100 companies, with 4,000 employees. Ground breaking is expected in 2008 for a second Research Park on 250 acres.
Punit Jain, LEED AP, Vice President Cannon Design Mr. Punit Jain is a key member of Cannon Design’s Science & Technology practice, with extensive experience in designing science, education, public and healthcare facilities. Mr. Jain has over eighteen years of experience in the practice of architecture. He has been instrumental in developing Cannon Design’s computer-based systems for laboratory and healthcare facilities programming and design. Mr. Jain serves as Cannon Design’s Sustainable Design Practice Leader, responsible for promoting high performance design through LEED® accreditation, conducting training for the firm's professionals, and championing sustainable design practices. He has facilitated and participated in numerous design charrettes, including the Sustainable Design Forum. Validating this commitment, he has been elected to the National Board of the United States Green Building Council-the originator of the LEED® system, and widely recognized as one of the most influential institutions in the sustainable movement worldwide.
Mary Jukuri, Principal JJR Mary Jukuri is a principal and senior campus planner for JJR, an award-winning planning and landscape architecture firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and part of the larger SmithGroup firm providing architecture, engineering, planning, and sustainable design services to universities across the country. Ms. Jukuri has led a broad range of projects from campus master plans to urban design and site implementation for universities, communities, and the private sector. Along with Clemson University ICAR Master Plan, she has led recent assignments that include master plans for Indiana University, the University of Minnesota East Gateway District, and the University of Nebraska Innovation Campus master plan.
David R. King, Senior Vice President SmithGroup David King is a Washington, D.C.-based architect whose design explores the relationships between form, material, and place — the tension between contemporary expression and the role of context, history, and community. He has played a prominent role in the planning and design of civic, commercial, academic and cultural commissions throughout the country, but especially in the nation’s capital city — one of the most dominant and protected urban contexts in the world. Mr. King’s work ranges from lead designer on the Master Plan for the ICAR technology campus to the meticulously detailed elements of the 1.1 million square foot downtown office building.
Keith Krach Chief Executive Officer in Residence, Benchmark Capital; Chief Executive Officer, 3Points Keith Krach has built and led three companies to global leadership, and currently serves as chief executive officer of investment holding company 3Points, Inc. In 1996, he co-founded Ariba (NASDAQ: ARBA), a business-to-business e-commerce pioneer, served as chief executive officer and chairman for six years, took the company public and built it into one of the fastest growing software companies in history. In 2000 he was honored by Ernst & Young as National Entrepreneur of the Year, and received the Technology Pioneer Award at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Previously Mr. Krach spent seven years at Rasna Corporation as a founding team member and chief operating officer, and played a key role in its acquisition by Parametric Technologies (NASDAQ: PMTC) for $500 million. He started his career at General Motors, was named its youngest vice president at 26, and spearheaded the company’s first Japanese joint venture, GMF Robotics. Mr. Krach served as Benchmark Capital’s first Entrepreneur-in-Residence in 1996.
Willa Small Kuh, Senior Associate Sasaki Associates Willa Kuh is a senior planner with expertise in development capacity studies, project permitting, and redevelopment. Ms. Kuh is responsible for project management and coordination, land-use planning, environmental consulting, and permitting for corporate, institutional and municipal clients. In addition, she is instrumental in promoting sustainable planning at Sasaki. Before joining Sasaki Associates, Ms. Kuh directed land and environmental planning for the developer of a new community, mediated a long-standing, multi-party land-use dispute, and served as Associate Commissioner at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
Scott Levitan, Senior Vice President, Development Director Forest City Science + Technology Group, Forest City - New East Baltimore Partnership Scott Levitan is Senior Vice President & Development Director of the Science + Technology Park at Johns Hopkins and the New East Baltimore Community—an $800 million project adjoining The Johns Hopkins University medical campus that includes life science research and office space, a residential community, and a broad variety of retail services and amenities. Scott provides general oversight of the organization’s business, market position and relationships in the region. This entails developing the overall strategy, marketing and project planning efforts of the Science & Technology business in the Region. He also provides day-to-day leadership to the Baltimore office and to the management of budgets, schedules and all aspects of ongoing development at the Science + Technology Park at Johns Hopkins. Scott has an extensive portfolio in large-scale, multi-use developments, specializing in university-related research parks. Most recently, he was the Executive Director of Real Estate Development for Georgia Tech University, where he oversaw all real estate planning and development activities for the university including the development of Technology Square, a 1.6 million-square foot institute sponsored, privatized development in Midtown Atlanta to include new homes for the College of Management, Global Learning Center, Economic Development Institute, Georgia Advanced Technology Ventures, Inc., Yamacraw Telecommunications Research Institute and the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center. Scott also served as the Director of University and Commercial Real Estate for Harvard University, where he was responsible for over 2 million square feet of property owned by Harvard. Scott holds a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University, a Master of Arts in Conservation Studies from the University of York in York England, and a Bachelor of Architecture from Louisiana State University.
Ken Loeppky, CPM, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Innovation Place Ken Loeppky has been with Innovation Place since 2000 assuming the role of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in 2008. As a member of the executive management, he has direct responsibility for the research park operations of all three Innovation Place locations Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert, including property management, marketing, leasing, technical operations, asset management and project management. In addition, Mr. Loeppky is responsible to develop relationships with external stakeholders including the universities, industry and government to help create, encourage and facilitate business opportunities in the Saskatchewan technology sector. In support of these responsibilities, he has participated in a number of community initiatives including the Regional Economic Development Authority’s cluster strategy stewardship committee, the Knowledge Corridor working group, the Innovation Centre steering committee, and the Petroleum Technology Research Centre management committee. Mr. Loeppky has a long history of involvement in not for profit organizations locally, nationally and internationally including serving as President of Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Regina and BOMA Canada. He also served at BOMA International as a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors.

Joel S. Marcus, CPA, Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer, President Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. Joel S. Marcus has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer (since 1997), President (since February 2009) and a director since Alexandria’s inception in 1994. Teresa W. McKnight, AURP Board of Directors Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director South Dakota State University Innovation Campus Teresa W. McKnight currently holds the position of CEO & Executive Director of South Dakota State University Innovation Campus. Prior to her current position she served as Director of the Utah State University Innovation Campus. Ms. McKnight has extensive experience in real property and facility management, real estate development, accounting, marketing, and human resource management, as well as tech-based economic development and technology commercialization. Ms. McKnight was instrumental in the name change from Utah State University Research and Technology Park to Utah State University Innovation Campus, developing a new business model for business support services and programs to Innovation Campus companies, implementation of a new logo and website for the Innovation Campus, putting together a master plan to expand the Innovation Campus from 38 acres to over 150 acres, promoting tenant growth from 28 companies to over 50 + companies, as well as several other administrative support and procedures in moving the expansion efforts of the Innovation Campus forward. Ms. McKnight was also a partner in a software development company, River Park Instructional Technologies, a spin-off company from university research within the Instructional Technology Department at Utah State University.
Marcia Mellitz, President and Chief Executive Officer Center for Emerging Technologies Marcia Mellitz, President & CEO of the Center for Emerging Technologies (CET), founded CET to support the development of start-up and early stage biomedical and other advanced technology companies in the St. Louis region. Ms. Mellitz is a national leader in facilitating the creation of new companies to commercialize biomedical and other advanced technologies and co-chaired the first national Translational Medicine Partnership Forum. She is co-principal investigator on a National Science Foundation grant to create a model for identifying university technology with commercial potential and facilitating the company creation process. Ms. Mellitz has consulted with other communities planning incubators and research parks. Ms. Mellitz has a B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Maryland and M.B.A. in Marketing and Research Management from Washington University.
Dr. Joe W. Meredith, President Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center Dr. Meredith is currently the President of the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center (CRC) in Blacksburg, Virginia. The CRC consists of over 100 high-technology companies that employ over 1,775 people. In 1997 the CRC was named, “Best Practice in Technology Transfer and Research Centers” in the eight-state, mid-Atlantic region. The park was selected to join an elite network of the best research parks in the world called it-parcs. Only one other U.S. park received this honor. In addition to managing the operation of the center, Dr. Meredith is responsible for facilitating technology transfer from the university, increasing the level of sponsored research at Virginia Tech, and marketing the CRC to prospective tenants. Dr. Meredith holds a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Tech, a Master's degree in Aeronautics, Astronautics, and Engineering Science from Purdue University, and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech. He also is a graduate of the Defense Systems Management College's Program Management Course.
Keith Mock, AIA, Principal Ballinger Keith Mock has 30 years experience in planning, design and project management and leads the firm’s research park and commercial office studio. Experience in a range of technically complex building types enables Mr. Mock to leverage a broad perspective of project objectives to meet each client’s particular project goals. His most recent accomplishments include completion of the Camden, New Jersey Waterfront Technology Center 750,000 SF Master Plan and the first phase of development, a 100,000 SF multi-tenant research incubator for New Jersey Economic Development Authority; and a 2.7M SF Master Plan of the Harriman Research + Technology Park in Albany, New York.
Jackie Kerby Moore, AURP Past President Executive Director Sandia Science & Technology Park Jackie Kerby Moore is the Executive Director of the Sandia Science & Technology Park and has been since its inception in 1998. This 200+ acre technology community is located adjacent to Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In her role as Executive Director, Ms. Moore oversees all aspects of the Park – including the management, marketing, and recruiting of tenant companies. The Park now serves as home for 30 organizations employing almost 2000 people, and total investment in the Park exceeds $323 million. In recognition of its success, the Sandia Science & Technology Park has received the 2008 Outstanding Research Park of the Year Award from the Association of University Research Parks, Technology-Led Economic Development Award from theU.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration, Outstanding Partnership Award from the Federal Laboratories Consortium Mid-Continent Region, and President’s Award from the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP). In related activities, Ms. Moore is Past President of the Board of Directors for the Association of University Research Parks, an international association. Ms. Moore has a Bachelors of Business Administration Degree and a Masters of Business Administration Degree from New Mexico Universities.
Michael Moss, Principal, Municipal Derivatives Department Bank of America Merrill Lynch As a Principal in the Municipal Finance Department of Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Michael Moss focuses on financings for municipal bond issuers. Mr. Moss spent the first 11 years of his career at Lehman Brothers, and since 2007 has been employed at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. In total, Mr. Moss has over 13 years of municipal finance-related experience, working as both an investment banker as well as a derivatives specialist. He has worked on over $5 billion of debt financings, including numerous bond and capital market-based transactions that have utilized such products as fixed/floating rate bonds, interest rate swaps, options, private placements, index floaters, caps/collars, and investment contracts. Mr. Moss holds a B.A. from Tufts University and an M.B.A. in Finance from New York University.
Laura O’Blenis, Executive Director and General Manager Knowledge Park With nearly 14 years experience in the Property Management Industry, Ms. Laura O’Blenis has spent most of her real estate career with real estate giant The Cadillac Fairview Corporation. Her portfolio of experience is broadened with the positions she has held within the community, including a number of non profit and business organizations in the Fredericton region and is a founding director with the Association of University Research Parks Canada. An MBA Candidate with the University of New Brunswick, Ms. O’Blenis is currently the Executive Director and General Manager of the Knowledge Park in Fredericton, New Brunswick where she is responsible for marketing, leasing, managing and developing the Research Park.
Alan C. O’Connor, MBA, Research Economist RTI International Alan O’Connor is a research economist at RTI International in the Technology, Energy, and the Environment program. He has more than 10 years’ experience in technology economics, case study and business analysis, and survey design for federal clients, such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and state and academic clients, such as the Maryland Technology Development Corporation and the North Carolina State University Industrial Extension Service. Mr. O’Connor specializes in leading multidisciplinary teams in retrospective and prospective analyses of the economic impacts of new technologies and innovation.
R.J. Reed, Southeast Regional Coordinator Whiting-Turner Virtual Design and Construction Building Group RJ Reed is the Southeast Regional Coordinator for Whiting-Turner's Virtual Design and Construction Building Group. Since joining the company in 2008, he has been instrumental in Whiting-Turner's Building Information Modeling efforts. He trains staff across the country on emerging technologies, maintains a company newsletter highlighting technology trends and issues, and delivers presentations for project teams, architects and engineers throughout the country. Mr. Reed joined Whiting-Turner after five years as an architect, where he employed virtual design on highly themed entertainment construction projects. Mr. Reed graduated from the University of Florida with a B.D. in Architecture, and while in school worked with the university to develop 3D models for potential projects to analyze campus impacts. He has extensive experience working with information models to coordinate complex construction projects and develop work plans so teams can gain efficiencies, save money, and work more effectively. With a decade of experience working in the AEC industry, he understands the value Building Information Modeling can bring to the industry and champions the use of these processes on every project.
Mack Reese, President Gateway Development Services From a real estate family, Mack Reese has been involved in the real estate and construction business his entire life. He started professionally with the Trammell Crow Company in 1985 in the office leasing and development division and, in 1988, left Crow with Don Childress in the formation of Childress Klein Properties. In 1996, he formed his own office development company and, in 1998, merged his company’s operations into the formation of Gateway. Mr. Reese graduated from Georgia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management, followed by a Master of Science in Management. While focusing primarily on project origination and marketing, Mr. Reese remains involved in all aspects of development, including finance and construction.
Rod Regier, Executive Director, Economic Development City of Kitchener Rod Regier received a bachelor of arts degree with honors in geography at the University of Winnipeg, and his master of arts in regional planning at the University of Waterloo. Mr. Regier provides leadership to a 12-person department and a community of stakeholders implementing the city’s economic development strategy, supported by the $110 million Economic Development Investment Fund.

Mike Schwenk, Vice President and Director, Technology Deployment and Outreach Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Mike Schwenk has thirty years of technical and business management experience in government, non-profit and corporate settings. For the past 10 years, he’s championed numerous efforts that moved leading research out of the science laboratory and into the business community, including overseeing intellectual property and commercial business activities. Mr. Schwenk offers a unique perspective on how businesses large and small can use the vast resources of a national laboratory to increase revenue and stimulate innovation. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Arizona State University; he also holds a masters degree in management and supervision from Central Michigan University.
Dr. Sujai Shivakumar, Senior Program Officer Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy National Research Council The National Academies Dr. Sujai Shivakumar serves as Deputy Director to the National Academies’ program on Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy. Since joining the National Academies in 2001, he has played a key role in the development of a globally recognized program on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He has helped lead the Academies evaluation of public-private partnerships and its multi-part analysis of the drivers of the information technology-led productivity growth. He also helped drive the Academies’ assessment of the Small Business Innovation Research program. More recently, he has contributed to the Academies’ comparative review of national innovation policies around the world as well as its review of best practices in innovation policies among U.S. states. Dr. Shivakumar received a B.S. in Physics from Carleton University, Canada, and received his doctorate in Economics from George Mason University in 1996.
Birgit Siber, BArch, OAA, MRAIC, LEED AP, Principal Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc. Birgit Siber is a graduate of the School of Architecture at the University of Toronto, a member of the Ontario Association of Architects and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Ms. Siber has practiced architecture with Diamond and Schmitt since 1996 and became a principal in 2003. She is responsible for the office’s sustainable design committee and is instrumental in spearheading “green” design initiatives for Diamond and Schmitt projects.
Jerome Smith, Co-Director MIT Venture Mentoring Service Jerome Smith is a mentor, and as a Co-Director manages the VMS Outreach Project, which provides services to other academic centers and organizations interested in adopting the VMS model as part of their entrepreneurship efforts. Mr. Smith is a seasoned senior executive with over 37 years of leadership experience in the chemical, polymer, medical and imaging industries, and a proven track record as a turnaround specialist at the senior executive level. He transformed four global DuPont businesses from loss or weak earnings positions to become strong, profitable and competitive units. He is recognized as a leader in major national and local non-profit organizations and has led strategic planning and development efforts for large and diverse groups. Mr. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas and an MBA from the University of Delaware.
Greg Stackhouse, Real Estate Project Manager Google, Inc. Greg Stackhouse is currently a real estate project manager for Google supporting the Americas region. Prior to this role, Mr. Stackhouse performed a similar function overseeing the Western USA/Canada and Latin America real estate portfolio at Honeywell International and worked extensively in Asia, Latin America and India as a real estate manger for PeopleSoft/JDEdwards. Mr. Stackhouse has 20+ years of real estate and facilities experience also supporting Sun Microsystems and StorageTek.
Carol A. Stewart, Manager of Business Development University of Waterloo Research + Technology Park With nearly 18 years of marketing experience, Carol Stewart has split her career between academic not-for-profit based entities and the high tech industry in Waterloo Region. The University of Waterloo Research + Technology provided the opportunity to bridge both these environments to create a community of innovation for industry and academic research to live, grow and prosper. In addition to being the single person dedicated to this UW project and managing all elements of the Park, Ms. Stewart is Vice President of the Association of University Research Parks (AURP) Canada, International Committee Member & Ambassador of Canada’s Technology Triangle, and the Marketing Committee Chair for three local women & children’s charities.
Harold E. Strong, Jr., AURP Secretary Director, Discovery Park and Technology Transfer University of North Texas Harold Strong is responsible for the design and development of UNT Discovery Park including real estate, obtaining funding from government and non-government sources, and developing partnerships with local governments, businesses and other stakeholders. He also leads development and implementation of strategies to foster incubators, attract start-up companies, and establish relationship with venture capital firms, individuals, government and non-government agencies for financing. As UNT’s Technology Officer, Mr. Strong oversees the Intellectual Property / Technology / Patent development and commercialization processes for the university. Previously, he served as the Director of Research Park at Texas A&M University and earlier worked with Collegiate Development Services in Irving, Texas, where he was the Vice President of Business Development working with university administrators, architects and investment banks to design and develop new student housing for colleges and universities utilizing tax exempt financing. He is a national recognized leader in research park development and currently serves as Secretary on the AURP Board of Directors.
David H. Turpin, Ph.D., FRSC, President, Vice Chancellor The University of Victoria Dr. David H. Turpin became the sixth President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Victoria in 2000. Under Dr. Turpin’s leadership, the University of Victoria adopted a strategic plan, which was renewed in February 2007, and a campus plan to guide the physical development of the campus. The strategic plan, A Vision for the Future – Building on Strength, sets long-term goals and expresses the vision of being a university of choice for outstanding students, faculty and staff from British Columbia, Canada and around the world. Dr. Turpin obtained his Ph.D. in botany and oceanography from the University of British Columbia in 1980. Before joining the University of Victoria, he served as Vice-Principal Academic and Dean of Arts and Science at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. An internationally recognized scholar, Dr. Turpin has been listed as a highly cited researcher by Thomson ISI for his work in the fields of plant biochemistry and physiology. He has received numerous academic honors and distinctions for his many contributions to research and teaching, including the Steacie Fellowship and election to the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Turpin serves on numerous boards and commissions, including as Chair of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada’s Standing Advisory Committee on International Relations and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN).
Catherine E. Vorwald, MS, MBA, Director of Business Development Wexford Science + Technology, LLC As Director of Business Development for Wexford Science + Technology, LLC, a real estate developer of university technology research parks, Catherine E. Vorwald has marketing and business development experience at companies ranging from Fortune 500 to start-up, has academic research experience at the NIH and the University of California, San Francisco; and has technology transfer experience at both Stanford and Johns Hopkins Universities. She is currently a board member of the Emerging Technology Center of Baltimore business incubator. She is a former board member of the The Licensing Executives Society USA-Canada, Inc., and the LES Foundation. She founded the Licensing Executives Society Maryland Local Chapter. Ms. Vorwald holds a Master of Business Administration in Finance from The Johns Hopkins University as well as a Master of Science Degree and a Bachelor Degree in Biological Sciences from Georgetown University and the University of California, Santa Cruz, respectively.
Eileen Walker, Chief Executive Officer Association of University Research Parks Eileen Walker is the Chief Executive Officer of the Association of University Research Parks (AURP), which promotes the development and operation of research parks that foster innovation, commercialization and economic competitiveness through collaboration among universities, industry and government. The 350-member organization is comprised of operating and planned research, science and tech parks around the world. Most recently, Ms. Walker consulted with Angelou Economics, an economic development consulting firm specializing in technology-led economic development. In collaboration with Angelou Economics, she completed a study for the Tri-Cities Science and Tech Park in Richland, Washington, home to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. She previously directed the Arizona State University Research Park in Tempe, Arizona, a university research park comprised of nearly two million square feet of developed space, with 33 companies, on 320 acres. For several years, Ms. Eileen served as a member of the Board of Directors of AURP, and as an officer of the Arizona Bioindustry Association, where she was the designated Arizona representative to BIO. Currently, she is Vice President of Habitat for Humanity Tucson. Ms. Walker is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, and holds a Master of International Management degree from the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird).
Ron Whalen, Preconstruction Director, LEED AP BE&K Building Group With more than 17 years of experience in the construction industry, Ron Whalen is responsible for preconstruction activities including estimating, scheduling, value engineering, and design management activities during the design phases of the project. Specific activities include conceptual estimates, detailed estimates, design review meetings, constructability reviews, cost control and value analysis. Mr. Whalen’s responsibilities have included providing construction budgets from schematic drawings, value analysis, defining bid packages and presentation of cost savings options and estimates to owners, board members and design professionals.
Bruce A. Wright, Associate Vice President for University Research Parks The University of Arizona Bruce Wright is responsible for directing the University of Arizona’s research parks which includes the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park and the Arizona Bioscience Park. He is also founder and president of the Arizona Center for Innovation, a high technology business incubator. Mr. Wright is a graduate of Willamette University where he earned his B.A. with distinction in political science. He has served in several different capacities during his twenty plus years at the University of Arizona, including director of the Office of Community and Public Service, Assistant to the President, Senior Officer for Community Affairs and Economic Development, and Associate Vice President for Economic Development. Prior to joining the University, he served as chief-of-staff to U.S. Representative Morris K. Udall and staff consultant to the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. He is a past president of the Association of University Research Parks and founder and principal of Research Park Associates 2 (RPA2), a consulting firm providing expertise in research park development and operations as well as regional economic development.
